Rumor: Microsoft to Buy Symantec?

Here’s a little rumor with big implications: A few well-known blogs are wondering if Symantec is a takeover target. And if so, the pundits wonder if Microsoft will be the buyer. Such a deal sounds highly unlikely to The VAR Guy… But our resident blogger never would have predicted Intel’s recent buyout of McAfee, either. Here’s more on the Microsoft-Symantec rumor.

The chatter started on Sept. 7, when Barron’s said Symantec was NOT a near-term acquisition target. But Barron’s was back again today, sharing a Briefing.com rumor that Microsoft may place a bid for Symantec. No doubt, a potential Microsoft-Symantec pairing could, in theory, counter the Intel-McAfee combo.

Frankly, The VAR Guy doubts Microsoft will buy Symantec. The reason: Symantec is not a pure security play. The company’s storage-related offerings push deep into the Unix and Linux markets. If Symantec could somehow sell off its storage interests, then The VAR Guy thinks Microsoft would be more likely to snap up Symantec’s security business.

But perhaps The VAR Guy is spending too much time on this Microsoft-Symantec rumor. It is, after all, just a rumor…
