CA Technologies (CA) announced its arcserve Unified Data Protection (UDP) solution this week, which promises to provide cost-effective backup and recovery across mixed IT environments. arcserve UDP is expected to help businesses boost the availability of critical systems by utilizing a mix of more than 30 new features to meet strict service level and recovery objectives.

According to CA, the solution will help enterprise users reduce the overall cost of data protection by utilizing a new unified architecture and recovery point server drive to maintain data protection capabilities across both physical and virtual environments via a web-based user console.

“CA arcserve UDP is the most significant release of arcserve to date. Architected from the ground up to deliver data protection simplicity, CA arcserve UDP allows businesses to reduce complexity and mitigate rising costs without sacrificing functionality,” said Mike Crest, general manager, Data Management at CA, in a prepared statement. “Simply put, it renders point solutions obsolete.”

The system runs on CA’s new recovery point server, which combines global source-side de-duplication, integrated block-level replication, AES 256-bit level encryption and cascading retention policies, according to the release. arcserve UDP takes advantage of its processing power and functionality by extending virtual machine protection with agentless protection for VMware (VMW) and Microsoft Hyper-V (MSFT) environments. The system also offers continuous full-system replication and high availability for almost instantaneous recovery of the entire system in case of a failure, the company noted.

arcserve UDP features several workflow-based protection plans that allow users to adjust their systems to the individual needs of their enterprise. The solution works with Microsoft Windows, Linux and Unix systems and is sold in five solution editions to allow customers to choose the level of protection they need.

CA arcserve is sold exclusively through CA's reseller channel, making it a very MSP and VAR-friendly option for those looking to get into the data protection and recovery market. Besides allowing for migration or replication of complete systems, applications or data from cloud to cloud, CA arcserve features MSP-designed reporting and specialized licensing programs and resources on the MSP Zone website for users. Arcserve is available now, and a free trial is available on CA’s website.
