Microsoft’s Myerson: Windows 10 Now on 110 Million Devices
At the end of August, Microsoft (MSFT) said some 75 million users had downloaded Windows 10. One month later downloads had run up to 100 million. And, now in early October, the vendor said some 110 million devices now run Windows 10.
So far, less than three months out from its launch, the Windows 10 download rate seems to be holding steady. Microsoft’s publicly stated and oft-repeated goal is to hit 1 billion downloads by 2018. Hmmm…
“In just a few short months, it’s been incredible to see more than 110 million devices already running Windows 10,” Terry Myerson, Microsoft Windows and Devices Group executive vice president, wrote in a blog posted in tandem with the vendor’s Windows 10 hardware event.
“I’m personally humbled and excited to see people around the world loving Windows 10,” he said. “Thank you for your feedback – the team and I love reading it and using it to help us shape the future of Windows.’
Myerson not only offered up the new OS’s current download figure but also some apps updates as well, as he outlined in a blog post.
Here’s some Myerson-provided nuggets:
- 8 million business PCs now are running Windows 10, which Myerson referred to as a “great response from IT professionals.”
- New apps for Windows 10 will include universal apps (they work on multiple platforms) for Facebook, its Messenger service and Instagram. Other universal apps include Flipagram, Box, the Candy Crush Soda Saga game, NASCAR and Uber, he said.
- Developer payouts have multiplied four-fold since the Windows 10 launch on July 29 but Myerson didn’t offer up an exact amount.
- The Windows Store has raked up some 1.25 billion visits in total but Myerson didn’t supply any figure for the number of downloads as compared to sessions. “This early activity is attracting new universal Windows apps to Windows 10,” Myerson said.
No matter how you slice it, the Windows Store with some 670,000 apps at the close of September, still is less than 5 percent of the Apple Store’s (AAPL) 1.5 million apps and Google (GOOG) Play’s 1.6 million apps.
