RMM: Spiceworks and Aprigo Partner For Permission Audits
Spiceworks, the free IT management platform that claims 1.2 million users, is big on partnering with other companies to enhance its own capabilities. The most recent example: a partnership with data management solution vendor Aprigo to provide Spiceworks users with better ways to audit permissions and manage file share security on their networks. Here are some details.
The catch here is that the permission audits are provided by the Aprigo NINJA solution, and that’s not (See update below) free — past the free trial they’re providing Spiceworks customers, anyway. But on the plus side, the Aprigo-powered functionality is designed to integrate with the relatively new Spiceworks feature of network monitoring.
“With Aprigo and Spiceworks, they now can view detailed data about file permissions in real-time, limit data vulnerabilities, streamline access rights management, and track changes to sensitive data with alerts and daily summaries,” said Spiceworks Co-Founder and CEO Scott Abel in a prepared statement.
For Aprigo’s part, they also have the NINJA product available for Google Docs, and we’ve heard through the grapevine that they’ve been making some channel moves in the last month or two, so expect to hear more about them soon.
Update: In the comments below, Aprigo Co-Founder Ron Zalkind clarifies that the network shares plugin discussed above is part of the Spiceworks 5.0 platform and is entirely free always – but for deeper visibility and better control, he recommends using the Aprigo NINJA product itself, which does have a free trial, after which it transitions to a free version with less features.

Hi Matthew,
Thanks for covering the new Aprigo network shares plugin for spiceworks.
We at Aprigo, are big fans of spiceworks and the spiceworks community and are extremely happy to extend spicework’s core capabilities.
I wanted to clarify a bit.
– The network shares plugin for spiceworks is part of 5.0 and is FREE. always. (it isn’t a free trial).
As you have described very accurately, it discover new network shares and allows you to audit share permissions.
– To gain even more visibility and control of your sensitive folders, beyond what the network shares plugin offer, we recommend you use the Aprigo NINJA product itself. This product does offer a free trial after which users will automatically transition to our FREE plan (with less features)
Ron
