How does an MSP go about starting a SOC practice? Or is that even a good idea?

That’s just one of the many topics channel partners discussed this week on social media. We’ve brought together a roundup of the most interesting conversations in the industry. Check out these Reddit, Twitter and LinkedIn posts that drew the most comments.

Starting a SOC?

A poster on the r/msp subreddit is considering launching a security operations center (SOC). More specifically, they’d like to perform network monitoring. The poster runs a one-person break/fix MSP that serves companies of under 25 employees.

Many commenters doubted that it made sense to offer one’s own SOC offering at the outset. These partners recommended teaming up with a SOC provider. U/pixiegod pointed out that running your own raises significant staffing challenges:

The original poster noted that they are most likely going to take the SOCaaS partnership approach.

Agent Gatherings

Two big services distributors brought partners and vendors together for networking and celebration.

First, Telarus hosted its Partner Summit in San Diego. From the looks of LinkedIn and Craig Galbraith’s reporting, everyone enjoyed themselves. Telarus also handed out some hardware, acknowledging its top vendors and sales partners.

At the same time Intelisys hosted its 5th Annual Fishing Trip at Lake Lanier in Georgia. Check out Fusion Connect National Channel Sales Manager Ashley Dahling’s LinkedIn post (click on the picture to see the comment thread).

Kaseya MSPs Leaving?

Here’s a juicy one for you. The ransomware attack that Kaseya suffered has the MSP industry talking. Most recently we learned that Kaseya has not negotiated with the REvil group. One redditor asked if MSPs are moving away from Kaseya’s IT management platforms.

On one hand, it appears that some customers are moving away from the platform. One commenter said they originally used SolarWinds but left that to start testing Kaseya. Now they will be using Microsoft mobile device management service Intune.

Other commenters pushed back on the migration trend.

U/GreenEggPage criticized the larger industry for its lack security practices.

“The only way companies will change is if you vote with your wallets,” u/ntohee wrote.
