Paessler Launches PRTG Network Monitoring 8.4 for MSPs

Paessler AG has launched version 8.4 of its PRTG Network Monitoring software. The updated version has a new Drag & Drop Maps Editor. Paessler says the editor allows managed services providers to arrange their monitoring data on a map of their IT network. The company, with primary offices in Germany and Los Angeles, has been making considerable noise lately. But we’re curious to see if Paessler catches on with MSPs serving SMB customers.

According to a company press release:

“PRTG already comes with many icons and background images that make it simple to model network states or show geographical distribution of sites individually. And, as with previous versions of the network monitoring solution, users can still add their own icons and backgrounds, such as device symbol’s depicting company branding or building plans for visual support. Any map can be made publicly available to users without logging in to PRTG by using an URL containing a “secret” map ID only known to the people it is disclosed to.”

Now here’s the interesting part. Paessler says it’s network monitoring software is used in over 150,000 installations to monitor LANs, WANs, servers, websites, appliances, URLs, and more. The software, Paessler says, handles up-/downtime monitoring, traffic and usage monitoring, SNMP, NetFlow, packet sniffing, and more. In recent months, Paessler has been taking steps to more aggressively promote its MSP Partner Program. And the company added customized billing to PRTG in February 2011.

We’ll be watching to see if MSPs embrace the Paessler strategy.
