Time for The VAR Guy to eat a little crow. A few days ago our resident blogger reported that open source IP PBXes — and Asterisk — would have a low profile at the VoiceCon Orlando conference this week in Orlando. But Digium and Fonality sent a wake-up call to The VAR Guy. Here’s a scoop.
For its part, Digium announced general availability of support subscriptions for open source Asterisk. According to Digium:
“The new Asterisk support services allow organizations of any size to leverage the power of open source Asterisk with the confidence that their system is supported by a world-class support organization. The support subscriptions provide technical support, hardware replacements and substantial discounts on training programs to enable users to take full advantage of the power of the Asterisk platform.”
This is the latest step in Digium’s ongoing effort to bolster its support network for Asterisk. The effort has also included a rapid channel-partner build out.
Digium adds:
Asterisk support subscriptions are bundles of services sold on an annual basis. They include technical and engineering support, consultative services, advance hardware replacement and discounts on Asterisk training and conference passes.
Meanwhile, Fonality is evangelizing the following news to VoiceCon attendees:
trixbox CE, Fonality’s open source project, in 2008 alone was downloaded a total of 2.8 million times, which includes 336,000 SourceForge downloads and an additional 2.48 million downloads and upgrades from trixbox.org. On the commercial side, Fonality’s trixbox Pro and PBXtra systems reached 44,000 deployments in over 125 countries delivering over 750 million calls using the company’s patent-pending hybrid-hosted architecture.
Of course, it’s important to keep the news in perspective. Most of VoiceCon focuses on closed-source VoIP and enterprise-class solutions. But Digium and Fonality both are seeking some more mind share at the event.
