Red Hat has launched Enterprise Virtualization 3.0, packed with two partner surprises: First, there’s a “central hub” that allows RHEV partners to showcase products and applications certified for Red Hat’s virtualization platform. Second, a new certification called “Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization-Certified” will help partners to stand out in the crowd. With those bonus efforts, can Red Hat and its partners gain ground on VMware?According to Red Hat, the marketplace “offers a forum for collaboration, partner documentation such as data sheets and solution guides, and trial evaluations of products and applications certified for use with Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization.” Partnes such as Acronis, CiRBA and eG Innovations have endorsed the strategy.
RHEV 3.0 offers more than 100 new features designed to “improve virtual machine performance, increase manageability and enhance usability,” according to the company. Red Hat hopes those features will help fulfill CEO Jimp Whitehurst’s prediction, from back in 2010, that RHEV will eventually leapfrog VMware in the market — much in the way that Linux leapfrogged Unix.
RHEV has gained market momentum and is now backed by 400 trained professionals. Still, that’s a small figure compared to the VMware partner ecosystem, which has thousands of partners. Plus, VMware continues to grow rapidly. In Q3 2012, revenues grew 32 percent to $942 million, and the company is set to announce its Q4 results Jan. 23, 2012.
