Here’s some short but sweet (and lucrative) news involving money in the open source industry. Opengear, provider of an open source console server, scored its first $1 million deal in December 2009. Next up, Opengear has won a deal involving Linode, a cloud and VPS (virtual private server) hosting company. Hmmm…. are solutions providers waking up to these niche open source opportunities?

Yes, Opengear has a partner program; in fact, it landed on The VAR Guy’s 2009 Open Source 50 report. (The 2010 survey is open now.)

True believers in Opengear include Linode — which has data centers in London, New Jersey, Atlanta, Dallas and Fremont (Calif.). According to a prepared statement from Linode VP Thomas Asaro: “Opengear console servers are one of the most critical parts of our infrastructure. Having Opengear CM4148s attached to all of our equipment gives us the independence to quickly diagnose and deal with issues ourselves, rather than waiting for on-site staff.”

Like The VAR Guy said: This news is short-n-sweet. Our resident blogger plans to keep a watchful eye on Opengear.
