Embedded Linux Confererence to Focus on Cars, IoT, Drones

Luxury car makers may be the last group you’d expect to see at a Linux conference. But a Jaguar Land Rover executive will be delivering one of the keynotes at the Linux Foundation‘s upcoming Embedded Linux event, which will highlight where the open source OS is headed in drones, the Internet of Things (IoT) and the automotive industry.

The keynote lineup for the conference, which the Linux Foundation announced Jan. 27, includes the following speakers and topics:

  • Paul Eremenko and Marti Bolivar, both of Project Ara, on their organization’s work to build “an open hardware platform for modular smartphones, with the goal of creating a vibrant module developer community and a marketplace from which consumers can create an entirely custom mobile device.”

  • Matt Jones of Jaguar Land Rover on building embedded open software for cars.

  • Deepak Saxena of Linaro on “challenges and opportunities” that arise as more organizations become involved in Linux kernel development.

  • Mark Skarpness of Intel on the importance of standards and open source for expanding IoT.

  • Andrew “Tridge” Tridgell, the Technical Steering Committee chair at Dronecode, on the project’s current status and future plans.

There will also be a keynote panel on IoT with participants from Sony Mobile, Intel’s Tizen project, the AllSeen Alliance, Panasonic and Samsung.

Besides the keynotes, the event will feature more than 50 sessions on topics as diverse as the Linux device tree and, from Mark Jacobsen of the U.S. Air Force, the role of open source in humanitarian airlift efforts in the Syrian civil war.

The Embedded Linux conference takes place March 23-25 in San Jose, California.
