Apple MacBook Air vs. Lenovo ThinkPad X300: The Great Debate

  • Written by The VAR Guy 1
  • August 20, 2008
Talk about your awkward moments: The VAR Guy used an Apple MacBook to take notes while visiting Lenovo and hearing about the ThinkPad X300 notebook last week. It was like sipping Pepsi in Coca Cola's headquarters. Instead of throwing The VAR Guy out of their offices, the Lenovo folks described why the ThinkPad X300 is a better option than Apple's MacBook Air. So, who won this debate? Take a look.

Lenovo ThinkPad X300 vs. Apple MacBook AirTalk about your awkward moments: The VAR Guy used an Apple MacBook to take notes while visiting Lenovo and hearing about the ThinkPad X300 notebook last week. It was like sipping Pepsi in Coca Cola’s headquarters. Instead of throwing The VAR Guy out of their offices, the Lenovo folks described why the ThinkPad X300 is a better option than Apple’s MacBook Air. So, who won this debate? Take a look.

Sure, the X300 is impressive. Quite a few of The VAR Guy’s peers say the notebook offers the most power and flexibility they’ve ever seen in such a small package. And Lenovo drove home its points by showing The VAR Guy the following video:

The video certainly drives home the X300’s advantage points. Overall, the X300 truly is impressive. But here’s the problem. The VAR Guy has grown allergic to Windows. He breaks out in hives when he sees Windows Vista. And he isn’t ready to downgrade to Windows XP. Our resident blogger really has grown biased in recent months, living on Mac OS X by day and dabbling in Ubuntu Linux by night.

Lenovo has made some strong moves to support Linux — including plans to launch Linux servers this fall. Let’s hope that effort continues on desktop and mobile systems. The vast majority of the world is sticking with Windows. And the X300 is a certified hit from what The VAR Guy hears. But for the ThinkPad X300 to win over The VAR Guy, it’s gonna have to come with Linux.

@Aikiwolfie: The VAR Guy’s head is straight today but rest of the body is a little out of whack.

Hey Var Guy, don’t worry. I hear that Lenovo will be shiping preinstalled Linux. I think I heard SUSE but don’t hold me to it. I use Kbuntu, but I won’t complain if the shipped Mint or PcLinuxOS or any of the better distros. I personally prefer KDE but, any of the top GUI’s. I loaded up DSL on a older box without a HD today, It looked good amp; ran like a scalded dog.
