Acquia Raises $15 Million And Attracts Partners

Acquia, which develops commercial solutions for the Drupal content management system, has scored $15 million in series D funding. But the really interesting part of the story: Acquia’s partner ecosystem now includes 260 companies, up from 240 last year. Those partners have helped Acquia to lift its revenues 225 percent over the past 12 months. Impressive. But is there a real channel partner opportunity here?

In a prepared statement, Acquia said it will use the additional funds to accelerate growth and expand internationally — particularly in Europe.

What’s the opportunity for channel partners? More than 2 percent of all websites worldwide were built on Drupal — though that doesn’t necessarily mean that those websites are involved in Acquia, the commercial developer. Still, Acquia points to key partners such VML, Engine Yard and Alfresco for its successful growth.

Acquia itself is a managed services provider (MSP) and a cloud service provider (CSP) of sorts. The company’s Acquia Network is a subscription service that scales from basic site monitoring to 24×7 enterprise-level support. Also, the Acquia Cloud hosts more than 450 customers and serves more than 4.5 billion http requests per month, the company claims.

Yes, The VAR Guy has heard from a growing number of resellers and VARs that offer website design services. Perhaps Acquia and Drupal will make the shortlist of platforms VARs and resellers consider.

Still, a closing disclaimer: Acquia is privately held. So it’s impossible for The VAR Guy to pinpoint the company’s actual revenues and profits. Rapid growth, as channel veterans know, sometimes doesn’t align with profitable growth. The VAR Guy will keep watching Acqui for more clues about the company’s performance.
