MongoDB's Dev Ittycheria at MongoDB World 2022

MongoDB Moves to Ease Migrating from Oracle with Relational Migrator

  • Written by Jeffrey Schwartz

The new migration connector is also compatible with Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL and PostgreSQL.

MONGODB WORLD — MongoDB is gunning to make it easier to move from Oracle and other databases with its new MongoDB Relational Migrator. Introduced at this week’s MongoDB World in New York, the connector also links to Microsoft’s SQL Server, MySQL and PostreSQL.

The SQL migration tool is among a wide range of new offerings that MongoDB revealed at its annual conference. The company also previewed its SQL Interface that will provide connections to popular visualization tools including Microsoft’s PowerBI, Tableau and Looker. Also noteworthy was the introduction of a search tool for MongoDB Atlas, the SaaS-based offering that’s MongoDB’s fastest growing offering.

However, partners will significantly benefit from the new MongoDB Relational Migrator, according to MongoDB channel chief Alan Chhabra. Moving existing workloads is the key to getting engagements off the ground for customers frustrated with SQL’s limitations, he noted.

Dev Ittycheria, MongoDB’s president and CEO (pictured above), emphasized those limitations during his opening keynote at this week’s gathering.

“We know that relational databases have way too many limitations,” Ittycheria said. “They’re too rigid, too inflexible, too cumbersome, too costly and just don’t scale. And other people know that too.”

Better than Lift-and-Shift

Moving to MongoDB’s cloud-based document database is a better option than lift-and-shift migration of Oracle database servers, Chhabra emphasized.

Here’s our most recent list of new products and services that agents, VARs, MSPs and other partners offer.

“They have too many monolithic applications that are breaking, not scaling, and they can’t just move then to the cloud, because it’s going to cost too much money,” Chhabra told Channel Futures.

MongoDB Relational Migrator will make it easier for partners to move Oracle and other relational workloads to MongoDB, Chhabra noted. Increasingly, companies seeking to modernize their applications are looking to cloud database services like MongoDB.

“You can’t really do microservices in Oracle, so customers are looking for a modern data architecture, and MongoDB is the best for microservices,” Chhabra added. “We have been working with partners and decided a couple of years ago that we’re going to now build our own tool.”

Consequently, Chhabra said more Oracle partners want to link up with MongoDB.

“Oracle partners are coming to us in droves, especially the big SIs, who want to get smarter on the latest data technologies like MongoDB,” he said. “It’s happening everywhere.”

Accenture Relationship

MongoDB’s largest partners that have engaged in numerous migrations from Oracle, as well as mainframes and other SQL databases. Among them include Accenture, CapGemini and HCL, according to Chhabra. Accenture, which MongoDB announced this week as its Partner of the Year, recently launched a jointly developed Data Modernizer Tool.

Accenture’s Data Modernizer builds on its Smart Data Mover tool added by Accenture two years ago. Data Modernizer is a Java-based tool for modernizing traditional applications tied to relational databases and moving them to MongoDB Atlas.

The newest tool “helps companies arrive at a recommended MongoDB document data model more quickly and efficiently,” according to a January blog post announcing Data Modernizer. Besides creating a faster operational data model for migration, it also addresses transformation.

MongoDB Acknowledges Top Partners

During the event, MongoDB announced that Accenture is the company’s “Global Systems Integrator Partner of the Year.” In a post announcing the awards, Chhabra noted: “Accenture is investing heavily in upskilling their consultants on MongoDB, as well as building assets to accelerate their clients’ MongoDB transformations.”

MongoDB also recognized Capgemini as its “Rising Star Systems Integrator” and HCL as “System Integration Certification Partner.” Furthermore, the company honored IBM as “Hybrid Cloud Partner of the Year.” Among cloud providers, AWS is MongoDB’s top co-sell partner. Google Cloud is marketplace leader and Alibaba Cloud is tops for emerging markets. Carahsoft is MongoDB’s “Distributor Partner of the Year” and startup enterprise no-code platform provider Unqork is “Unicorn Partner of the Year.”

On the ISV side, MongoDB recognized BigID for its data discovery and privacy platform. Confluent, the developer of the Apache Kafka, also took home honors for its real-time event streaming offering.
