HP is holding its Discover event for partners this week in Las Vegas and, as part of the goings-on, made several product announcements. One of those new releases involves backup designed for as-a-service provisioning through VARs and MSPs.

“Partners with a backup practice will be particularly interested in StoreOnce VSA, as it allows them to go after the small and midsize market with an offering that enables customers to repurpose unused or older server infrastructure to address backup and recovery needs in a virtualized environment,” Shannah Thompson, senior manager of Channel Sales Enablement & Marketing, Storage Worldwide at HP, told Channel Partners.

The HP StoreOnce Virtual Storage Appliance (VSA) is hardware-agnostic, software-defined storage deployed as a virtual machine existing server infrastructure. HP said this cuts capex by 65 percent, as compared to dedicated backup appliance. And, because StoreOnce VSA shares the same software as the on-premise StoreOnce appliances, it also includes the same cross-family replication, backup application and integration and federated deduplication.

StoreOnce VSA, which supports up to 10 TB of data, is slated for a July release date; according to reports, HP also is making a version of StoreOnce VA for Microsofts HyperV hypervisor.
