As NoSQL databases catch on for Big Data applications, where are the NoSQL partner programs for resellers, integrators and VARs? So far, 10gen seems to be the only company shouting an answer.

You know the general trend: NoSQL databases are catching on for big data applications. Despite the continued growth of Oracle (ORCL), MySQL and Microsoft (MSFT) SQL Server, it looks like NoSQL could be a lucrative opportunity for channel partners. The challenge: Where are the NoSQL partner programs? A quick check of the market finds very few in place.

One big exception seems to involve 10gen, promoter of MongoDB — a popular NoSQL offering. Rewind to March 2013, and 10gen officially launched its partner program for members, authorized partners and strategic partners.

Generally speaking, most of 10gen’s NoSQL rivals have strategic relationships with hardware, software and cloud companies. But 10gen’s partner program includes value-added resellers, volume resellers, distributors and other channel companies.

How big is the market opportunity? Back in March, MongoDB was up to 3.8 million downloads, 47,000 Online Education registrations, 15,000 MongoDB User Group (MUG) members and 10,000 attendees at MongoDB global events in 2012, 10gen claimed.

Where do the partner efforts go from here? The answer resides with Ed Albanese, VP of business development at 10gen. Albanese essentially is the company’s channel chief. The VAR Guy is chasing a potential interview with him now.

P.S. — If additional NoSQL software companies have formalized channel partner programs for resellers, VARs and integrators then please be sure to share the info with The VAR Guy.

UPDATE: Aug 14, 10:06 a.m.: Time for The VAR Guy to eat a little crow and admit an error. Open Source veteran Matt Asay is now driving 10gen’s partner efforts. The VAR Guy plans to check in with him next week. -TVG
