If you trace human nature back far enough—to even before agriculture—you get to a point in time when people hunted and foraged for their food—for their very survival. They did this in small teams that were bound together by mutual dependence and a common objective. They counted on each other’s hunting prowess. And their goal was simple: to eat. These people survived in groups.

When you get right down to it, human nature really hasn’t changed that much. People in the workplace still depend on each other’s skills to accomplish a common goal: to help the company function and succeed. And again, they survive in groups.

Today, however, we have technology to help us solve problems and better meet our objectives. And more and more, that technology involves social networking, crowdsourcing and collaboration—technological incarnations of how people innately solve problems.

Social Media and Corporate Collaboration

Whether your customers want to admit it or not, their workers are using consumer social tools for business. It’s in their very nature to seek out and leverage these tools. And they won’t wait around for IT to enable them. Team members find that by using social tools, they reach better and faster business outcomes that are important to the overall competitive stance of the organization.

IDC reports that some 57 percent of corporate employees are using consumer social tools for business purposes at least once per week. In many of these organizations, however, these tools aren’t approved by IT and are simply “flying under the radar.” This situation seriously impacts the risk profile of these companies and inhibits their ability to meet compliance regulations.

IT security departments are understandably averse to consumer social tools. Why? Because to date, there have been simply too many unknowns: unknown boundaries, unknown people, unknown applications and unknown access. To embrace these tools, there needs to be a way to balance social interactions and collaboration engagements with the security and compliance requirements of the enterprise. And that’s where the sales opportunity resides.
