Good news and bad news seem to be spreading across the IT channel. Hardware sales are picking up. But companies such as Dell Inc. (as well as Dell’s components suppliers) are having a difficult time fulfilling partner and customer demand. In particular, the supply chain issues seem to be impacting selected Dell PowerEdge server shipments. Here’s the scoop.

Several Dell channel partners tell The VAR Guy they’ve been waiting since November and December 2009 for selected server shipments. The chatter has spilled over into Dell’s online communities.

The VAR Guy reached out to Dell for comment. A Dell spokeswoman offered up these perspectives:

“We are seeing higher than expected demand for certain servers for some of our customers, and there are also some industry-wide constraints on some components that are delaying when we can manufacture products for customers.  These factors combined are affecting some of our customers, who are experiencing delays in receiving product.  We’re working to solve the issues, and regret any inconvenience that this has caused our customers.”

Groundhog Day

Dell isn’t alone. Cisco Systems’ partners apparently have been facing similar product delays, Channel Insider reported a few days ago.

Alas, channel partners should not have to suffer from such supply chain issues. But The VAR Guy suspects the issues aren’t limited to Cisco and Dell, since the heart of the matter seems to involve components suppliers. Our resident blogger will keep poking around this story.

In the meantime, our resident blogger hopes most VARs are benefiting from the story’s silver lining: Increased customer demand.
