Amazon Web Services Launches Partner Competencies For Sensitive Government Data

By Chris

Amazon Web Services today unveiled new competencies for partners that demonstrate proficiency working with civilian and military agencies, and managing government workloads in the AWS GovCloud.

The AWS Government Competency and the AWS GovCloud (US) Skill Program – additions to the AWS Competency Program – were announced during the Public Sector Summit being held in Washington, D.C.

Also today, AWS recognized 24 members of the AWS Partner Network that have earned the designations, either for their expertise providing technology solutions, or as vendors of software products designed for the public sector.

“The AWS Cloud provides scalable, cost-efficient solutions for governments around the world,” says the AWS web page describing the programs. “Our cloud services can be employed to meet mandates, reduce costs, drive efficiencies, and increase innovation across civilian agencies, national defense, … intelligence communities, and state and local governments.”

The AWS Government Competency will allow customers to easily identify partners with experience and expertise in various industry areas.

An AWS blog post describes the concentrations as follows:

  • Government Transportation, Facilities, and Infrastructure Management – Solutions that allow civic leaders to more efficiently address their complex transportation needs from analytics to fleet and asset management.

  • Justice and Public Safety – Solutions that enable law enforcement and public safety agencies to make informed, data-driven decisions, improve operational efficiencies, and securely store and manage video workloads.

  • Public Healthcare – Solutions to increase the agility and innovation of public health organizations while meeting unique data protection requirements.

  • Financial and Fiscal Affairs – Solutions in financial modeling and analytic systems that ingest, process, and visualize data at scale.

  • Citizen Services – Solutions to enhance and innovate government engagement with their citizens.

  • National Security and Defense – Solutions that service the national security and defense community to increase cybersecurity posture and IT agility in a cost-effective way to ensure mission success.

  • Security and Compliance – Solutions that help government customers build, operate, and certify their systems in accordance with global security and compliance requirements. These governance-focused solutions have automated audit-friendly service features and meet broad security standards and frameworks.

  • Open Data – Services that improve access to publicly available sources of data via data portals, developer tools, and APIs.

“Customers working with AWS Government Competency Partners will have access to innovative, cloud-based solutions that comply with the highest AWS standards,” the blog states.

The AWS GovCloud is a segregated region of the AWS cloud, manned by specially vetted employees, designed to host sensitive data and regulated workloads.

Users of GovCloud can support their U.S. government compliance requirements, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP).

“AWS GovCloud (US) is available to U.S. government agencies and organizations in government-regulated industries, that meet GovCloud (US) requirements for access,” the blog states. “Customers can request access to the “Amazon Web Services – AWS GovCloud (US) Region” by submitting a request on the Compliance Contact Us Request Form.”
