VMware Partners With SingTel for Hybrid Enterprise Cloud

VMware has inked a deal with Singapore-based SingTel to launch SingTel’s PowerOn compute enterprise cloud. It’s based on VMware vCloud Datacenter Services and is being billed as a “hybrid” cloud. Read on for the details …

With all the buzz around cloud, there’s usually one point that pins it down: cost. VMware and SingTel believe enterprises using their new solution could save as much as 73 percent on their data center costs.

SingTel‘s solution allows a company to expand its resources into the cloud without having to reconfigure software applications. The idea is to provide on-demand, pay-as-you-use public cloud resources that link back down to a company’s own network. Essentially, companies can turn on a switch and presto! They’ve got IT resources at their disposal without dropping anything into their data center. They can use the cloud service at their discretion and migrate a little bit at a time. The cloud is always there.

Currently, SingTel’s customer market is the Asia Pacific region, but the service is built on the backbone of VMware’s vCloud. While the SingTel deal doesn’t directly impact MSPs and other service providers outside Apac, it does give them fodder for similar services using vCloud. VMware noted a “one-cloud-fits-all” approach isn’t the right way to go, and vCloud allows for a custom-tailored approach with incremental changes and organized migration to newer resources.
