Report: Microsoft Readying Windows 8 for October 2012 Launch
There’s been so much buzz about Microsoft Windows 8, but so very little mentioned about the official release date — until now. It looks as though Windows 8 will be ready by the summer of 2012, just in time for an October release date. Here are the quick details …
Microsoft apparently is gearing up to ship Windows 8 in October, with both Intel and ARM variants in tow. Microsoft also apparently will be unveiling a “release strategy” in April so OEMs and vendors can learn what Microsoft is planning with its stylish new operating system. All these details come courtesy of Bloomberg, which has spoken to “people with knowledge of [Microsoft’s] schedule.” Of course, no names have been named, as usual.
However, those very same sources also revealed there will be “fewer than” five ARM-based tablets. However, Intel tablets are alleged to be in great supply, along with traditional computers — figures landed at somewhere around 40 different Intel-based units. And that raises some key questions regarding Windows 8’s rollout:
- With a mix of Intel and ARM tablets, how will consumers understand the pros and cons of buying an ARM-based Windows 8 tablet? Will Microsoft also educate as it campaigns?
- Will Microsoft deliver on its promise that ARM and Intel will co-exist — and launch at the same exact time?
- If Microsoft is met with a weak ARM reception, will it continue to push the platform?
Bloomberg’s sources also claim Microsoft is trying as hard as it can to deliver something substantial before the holiday season to ensure adequate competition with Apple and Google. But I think if Microsoft delivers, the real competition will be with Google. Big picture for the channel? It’s super-simple: 2013 is likely the deadline for VARs to get their mobility offerings in tip-top shape.
