Pluribus Releases Netvisor 2.0, Freedom Server-Switches

A new server-switch architecture from Pluribus Networks is intended to integrate compute, network, storage and bare-metal hypervisor operating system technologies. The company’s new Pluribus Freedom Server-Switch product line was designed to bring network and services closer to the applications.
The architecture is partially intended to drive bare-metal network functions virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN), as well as transport-aware applications. Although a complex technology, its real aim is to simplify things by eliminating separate monitoring networks, separate SANs, separate overlays/underlays, separate external controllers, L4-L7 appliance sprawl and separate servers for services and orchestration.
According to Pluribus, the new Freedom architecture provides several benefits, including enabling:
- A new class of network-aware, mission-critical enterprise applications and NFV services, leveraging compute, network and storage integration.
- An open architecture to drive radical consolidation and simplification of the data center infrastructure.
- Complete unification of the devops/netops management model to drive ultimate network simplification and ease of management.
Pluribus’ technologies are mostly aimed at the data center, but in particular, they’re meant to be technology that drives public and private clouds.
As for Netvisor 2.0, it’s a major version update that leverages high availability, server-style clustering technology. It’s meant to be a fully automated and distributed fabric-cluster that provides partners and customers with the ability to deploy apps and services on top of the cluster for fabric-wide visibility.
Pluribus is a Gold member of the Oracle PartnerNetwork. Oracle’s Solaris vice president had this to say about the Freedom architecture: “The Pluribus Networks Freedom architecture is a disruptive combination of software and hardware technologies. By running Oracle Solaris on it, Oracle Solaris can control compute, network and storage technologies, which can help eliminate bottlenecks that would impact the application performance,” said Markus Flierl, vice president of Oracle Solaris.
