Avnet Adds Oracle Health Sciences Offerings to HealthPath
“This is a marquee day for the Oracle business evolution of our SolutionsPath strategy, which is the shaft of the sword,” said Chris Swahn, VP and general manager of Avnet Technology Solutions, Americas Oracle Solutions Group. “We’ve taught, engaged educated our partners on getting into verticals. But tip of the sword is the application and we’re adding to those applications.”
Now available are Oracle’s Health Information Exchange and Oracle Enterprise Healthcare Analytics solutions, which can help “to solve the business challenges facing small and midsize hospitals related to accountable care, electronic health records (EHRs) and health information exchanges (HIEs),” according to Avnet.
“Now we have two specific apps that because of government regulation healthcare facilities will have to implement,” Swahn said, referring to the legislation known as the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act.
“When you look one step further at HIE, as an example if I live in Albany and I’m in a car accident in Manhattan and my physician has my records available via the Health Information Exchange, that hospital in Manhattan will have access to my records immediately, including my blood type, what medications I am allergic to, etc.,” he added. “What we are seeing is individual hospitals … will have to connect to each other to be able to transfer that data. And as the [regulations become law] in 2013-2015, that will force providers to figure out how to transmit data.”
Swahn noted not just any healthcare-focused channel partner can offer the Oracle Health Sciences technologies. “I have a rule that any application that is delivered by us has to be equal to or better than an Oracle- or top-notch systems integrator-delivered solution. Today I have six partners I selected that meet the requirements to get us to that, and I think we’ll work toward 15 or 20 solid partners to create less channel conflict, more stickiness and more profitability.”
Those carefully selected partners go through a rigorous training program that includes education and training on the Oracle Health Sciences solutions, and how these technologies fit in with the full complement of Oracle technologies.
“This is a way to take full advantage of the ‘Red Stack,’ from application to hardware, and I am now showing Oracle and to my partner base I am making the statement that [Avnet Oracle Solutions Group is] playing the game — I am going to deliver an Avnet solution that fits the Oracle model,” Swahn said. “I cannot point to another distributor that can do what we can do.”
