Barracuda has acquired advanced bot detection technology from InfiSecure Technologies to beef up its application security portfolio.

InfiSecure specializes in low-latency detection and mitigation of advanced bots, and adds capabilities to Barracuda’s recently announced Advanced Bot Protection, which will be available for both the Barracuda WAF-as-a-Service and Web Application Firewall platforms.

Nitzan Miron, Barracuda’s vice president of product management for application security services, tells us partners already are using Barracuda’s Advanced Bot Protection to help their customers block advanced bots.

“With today’s acquisition, that feature of Barracuda Web Application Firewall and WAF-as-a-Service is getting even more powerful,” he said. “Barracuda partners will get even more advanced functionality as part of their existing subscription, without a change in price, and without additional configuration or management overhead.”

After evaluating several bot protection vendors, Barracuda was impressed with InfiSecure’s technology and initially planned to license it from InfiSecure for Barracuda’s partners and customers, Miron said.

“After working together on integration, both companies realized that Barracuda’s channel would provide InfiSecure a level of scale that it would not otherwise be able to obtain, and InfiSecure would provide Barracuda with unique technology, so we decided to bring InfiSecure into the Barracuda organization,” he said.

InfiSecure’s technology is effective at detecting low-and-slow bots — bots that rotate their IP addresses often and only make requests very slowly, making them hard to detect, Miron said. With this acquisition, Barracuda partners now can help their customers block these types of bots, he said.

“InfiSecure’s technology provides automated, customized protection for each application specifically, rather than relying on a set of ‘one-size-fits-all’ signatures,” he said. “This means partners and customers spend less time configuring and managing the solution compared to competitors in the space, and yet they enjoy powerful, customized protection for their applications.”

Barracuda “prides itself on providing powerful security solutions that are easy to deploy for our partners and customers,” Miron said. Barracuda provides security to more than 150,000 organizations globally.

“InfiSecure’s automation allows Barracuda to provide even more powerful security, without increasing configuration or management overhead, thereby enabling our partners to provide value to customers without having to learn new technology or manage new solutions,” he said.
