Thousands of Mobile Devices Are Left Behind at MLB Parks

By now, you've seen articles in favor of and against the whole bring your own devices (BYOD) trend. Sure, BYOD makes it a lot easier on the employees, but not all employers agree. Confidential company data may be lost or stolen with ease. Credant Technologies, a company that develops solutions for data protection, recently took a look at all the smartphones, tablets and other devices left behind at major league baseball venues across the United States.

Interestingly enough, the results found that most lost devices were recovered from seats and restrooms, brought to lost and found areas and ultimately donated to charities if left unclaimed for more than 30 days.

The survey conducted revealed:

  • More than  seventeen hundred devices were left behind at ten baseball parks during the six month season. Of those, 97 percent were tablets or smartphones, 2 percent were USBs, and 1 percent were laptops.
  • Most lost devices are recovered from under seats, in cup holders and in restrooms.
  • More than half of lost devices are reclaimed by the owner, but hundreds of devices make their way to new owners, putting personal and enterprise data at serious risk indefinitely.
