SolarWinds to Support Microsoft Hyper-V, Dell Compellent

Big news today from SolarWinds, the IT management software provider that recently acquired the patch management software provider EminentWare and added new features to its server and application monitoring solution. SolarWinds has now upgraded another one of its IT management solutions — the SolarWinds Storage Manager — to include support for Dell Compellent.

Additionally, the company has released the SolarWinds VM Monitor for Hyper-V, the newest virtualization tool within its IT management software solution suite.

Upgraded Storage Manager

The SolarWinds Storage Manager already comes with support for Dell EqualLogic and Dell PowerVault MD3000i. According to SolarWinds, the added support for Dell Compellent makes its Storage Manager “the most complete monitoring tool for Dell arrays,” according to the company’s press release. Keep in mind that SolarWinds Storage Manager is a multi-vendor platform. So in addition to its full support for Dell products, the storage software solution includes storage and monitoring support for more than 25 different storage arrays from 10 different vendors.

“Storage Manager supports all major vendors, including Dell, EMC, HDS, HP, IBM, LSI, NetApp, Oracle (Sun), Pillar and Xiotech,” SolarWinds VP and Market Leader Sanjay Castelino said in a prepared statement. “It is an admin’s single pane of glass into real time physical and virtual storage data, making it easy to report, plan, troubleshoot and drill down into critical views.”

SolarWinds VM Monitor for Hyper-V

SolarWinds also expanded its virtualization capabilities by releasing a new monitoring tool called the SolarWinds VM Monitor for Hyper-V. According to the company, the new tool operates similarly to its current  monitoring tool for VMware. It can monitor activities and track the health of Hyper-V hosts. Then it can give users an even more detailed look into its Hyper-V environment with machine health statistics like memory utilization, the exact number of VMs that are configured and running, names of VMs, memory status and network usage.

The new version of the SolarWinds Storage Manager is available at a starting price of $2,995. The new SolarWinds Virtualization Manager is also on the market for the same price.

Side note: The VM Monitor for Hyper-V tool that was announced is actually a free tool and is not the same product as Virtualization Manager.
