Telecom operator NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) is launching what it calls a “seamless” global managed security service solution. The solution, aimed at providing total outsourcing of security risk management solutions for enterprise customers, appears to have the potential to cause a major impact on the managed security services market.
NTT Com appears to want to offer enterprise customers a high-tech “security blanket” that will cover them from all types of potential IT security threats. The telecom provider says it will deliver managed security solutions based both in the cloud and on the customer’s premises, tailored to the specific customer IT environment. Specialists will analyze security logs and perform risk visualization, while more than 400 experts in 13 countries will provide 24/7 support.
Specific services will include vulnerability measurement and profiling, detection of and protection against external unauthorized access and virus infections via boundaries between LAN and WAN, devices, or virtual machines, and checking of files exchanged between networks for unknown threats.
Everyone Wants a Piece of the Managed Security PieNTT Com is offering its new managed security solution under its “Global Cloud Vision” initiative launched in October 2011 that is intended to offer total information/communications technology (ICT) outsourcing services. Considering how lucrative the managed security market is, and how the development of trends such as BYOD and cloud computing is creating new security risks, it is not surprising that a telecom provider like NTT Com would want to become a player.
NTT Com already has the global network in place, and says it is partnering with security research institutes and experts to fill any gaps in security expertise. MSPs offering managed security services should fully expect many more telecom companies and other entities with an established infrastructure and client base to start developing similar managed security service offerings. So what are MSPs to do?
Standing Up To the Big BoysObviously, a global telecom giant like NTT Com has a lot of advantages the typical MSP cannot directly compete with. These include size, scale, resources, and the fact that it is very easy for an existing NTT Com customer to bundle an enterprise security service in with their other NTT Com services.
However, MSPs still have a few advantages of their own. These include internal know how and competency, superior responsiveness to and intimacy with the client, and greater personalization of services. Although NTT Com promises and will most likely deliver a tailored solution, this doesn’t change the fact an MSP with fewer customers and a smaller scale of business can more easily and thoroughly deliver a managed security service that is truly unique to the user’s needs. NTT Com and other “big boys” will surely get their share of the managed security pie, but MSPs hardly have to settle for going hungry.
