Managed communications platform vendor Vodafone has been putting an increased focus on promoting its mobile application management (MAM) system, a feature that is is accessible through Vodafone Device Manager. Why is the heightened focus? Vodafone explained its strategy. Here are the details.
First some background. The company suggested that there have been two generations in mobility. The first has created a secured but unlikeable user experience, and the second revolves around user experience. Vodafone said that it has designed its system around the latter, specifically bring your own device (BYOD).
Promoters say the BYOD movement creates a more employee-friendly work environment by allowing users to leverage personal devices. To mitigate the risks of mobile application threats that come with BYOD, Vodafone developed its MAM solution, which provides secure device management. The company’s view: business and personal data must be separated, but what is its solution?
Securing Corporate Data Without Restricting Personal Devices
Vodafone has designed a connected container architecture to provide security that protects app data for MSPs, but is invisible to the user. The solution achieves this via two components: AppConnect, and AppTunnel:
- AppConnect — containerizes apps to protect data-at-rest without touching personal data. Each app becomes a secure container which encrypts data and protects it from unauthorized access and removal;
- AppTunnel — provides secure tunnelling and access control to protect app data-in-motion. Fine-grained app-by-app session security protects the connection of each app container to the corporate network. AppTunnel is particularly useful in BYOD settings where organizations may not want to open up VPN access to all apps on the device.
Vodafone Mobile Threat Manager is also available for MSPs and offers a managed, cloud-based security solution for mobile devices.
These MAM features take Vodafone’s platform one step further. The company also recently released Vodafone Device Manager to protect business data from security attacks and device loss or theft. The solution allows MSPs to remotely manage all mobile devices over the air; audit, track, and update each one; lock stolen or lost devices; encrypt data; secure them with passwords; comply with corporate policies; and achieve secure, scalable and reliable application management across operating systems
