LabTech 2012.1: Enhanced Mobile Device Management, Remote Control
LabTech Software version 2012.1, with enhanced mobile device management (MDM) for Apple iOS and Gooogle Android smartphones and tablets, and better VNC remote control capabilities, is expected to debut in December, MSPmentor has confirmed. The new release comes at a key time, as LabTech attempts to help MSPs proactively manage a greater range of devices and services.
I’m interested in two key areas here. Although I don’t run LabTech first-hand, MSPs have told me:
- LabTech’s Ignite feature, introduced earlier this year, was designed to give MSPs pre-configured capabilities that got them going faster. But earlier this year, Ignite caused some information overload for some MSPs. I hear LabTech has made good progress on that challenge and suspect the progress continues with 2012.1.
- LabTech’s MDM capabilities, while promising, seemed to be a work in progress earlier this year. A few readers told me they wanted the Apple iOS management features to be enhanced. Others said they were holding off until improvements arrive. Here again, LabTech has made enhancements with 2012.1.
According to a prepared statement, version 2012.1 includes:
“enhanced VNC performance for optimized remote control, additional integrations with third-party products, extended mobile device management (MDM) capabilities, and enhancements to LabTech Ignite, an industry-exclusive feature built directly into LabTech designed to provide IT service providers with the highest level of automation out-of-the-box.
More specifically, LabTech MDM feature enhancements include the service-oriented capabilities that LabTech partners requested, including data plan management, geo-location tracking, the ability for end-users to create tickets and upload screenshots, selective wipe of Apple iOS devices and new out-of-the-box MDM reports. In addition, the LabTech MDM agent for Android devices has been updated based on the new Android SDKs.”
I just got back from Amazon AWS re:Invent in Las Vegas and haven’t had a chance to speak directly with LabTech CEO Matt Nachtrab for his thoughts, but he confirmed the release is coming sometime in December or so. I hope to catch his ear the week of Dec. 3 to learn more.
Also of note, LabTech 2012.1 integrates with more third-party solutions such as HitmanPro (for malware scanning and remediation), Symantec Backup Exec 2012 and Symantec Endpoint Protection, and Intel vPro KVM.
