Does BlackBerry’s Demise Signal an End for BYOD?
It wasn't that long ago — less than 10 years — when BlackBerry (BBRY) enjoyed a stronghold over the corporate mobile market with its handsets, servers and Exhange integration. But a nearly $1 billion loss for the most recent quarter and a report from Computerworld that Gartner will tell its customers to migrate away from Blackberry may be among the final blows the embattled Canadian company can withstain. So what does Blackberry's likely demise mean for managed mobile services and mobile device management?
Think about it this way. Blackberry was the incumbant in business. Now IT organizations will need to look to another platform as the secure standard for business. What are the choices? Apple's iOS and iPhone, Google's Android and Microsoft Windows Phone. If IT makes these the standard instead of Blackberry, will there be any need for a BYOD policy anymore? If you issue iPhones to your employees, is there another platform they will try to sneak in?
Yes, MSPs and other tech administrators will still need to manage fleets of phones and mobile devices. Yes, there will continue to be concerns about IP theft, lost devices and security. But IT will regain control if it issues a standard device to employees.
