Apple iPad Mini Mock Ups Emerge
With all the hoopla surrounding Wednesday’s expected unveiling of Apple’s (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone 5, will the company say anything (or if not, even hint) tomorrow about its rumored iPad Mini? Before you answer consider this: A French blog that posted alleged pictures of the impending smartphone is running mockups of the tablet first spotted on a Chinese web site. Hmmm…
The story, as picked up here, initially reported the mockups as actual (well, alleged) photographs of the iPad Mini but later clarified that the images, instead, were likenesses. According to the report, Apple is mum on the subject, which is to be expected. The purported iPad Mini mockup photos show the device in a variety of angles, juxtaposed in a couple of shots with the iPhone 4S and a possible iPhone 5 unit.
Steve Hemmerstoffer, editor of the French site wrote (as translated): “The famous miniature version of the Apple tablet is still not confirmed, we remain cautious and observe the following pictures by holding the end of our good old tweezers rumors.”
A number of outlets have reported that the iPad Mini, which initially was rumored to debut alongside the iPhone 5, will be unwrapped in a separate event, perhaps in October, with Apple electing not to mute the cheers celebrating one new device with that of another. Speculation has it that the iPad Mini will clock in at 7.85 inches, not all that much smaller than the 9.5-inch standard bearer iPad, but will be far thinner, lighter and narrower than its older cousin, and priced around $250.
When Apple brings the long-talked about iPad Mini into public view, it will be interesting to see how the vendor positions the unit and, most importantly, the market opportunity, one it vehemently has denied for some time. A pint-sized iPad could serve to extend Apple’s dominant position in the tablet market, fend off competitors and give it an answer to competitors Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN), Google (NSDQ: GOOG) and Samsung already with a foothold in the segment.
