Apperian Provides App Security Freedom via Open Distribution

Apperian is giving application developers the freedom to implement their own security practices with the addition of support for universal app distribution.
By allowing its customers to distribute applications without corporate mobile device management (MDM) enrollment, the mobile application management (MAM) provider is cutting out the need for a third-party security solution.
While Apperian still supports app distribution through MDM and Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) systems, the company said changing its app distribution policy will let customers leverage existing technology investments and deliver their apps in a form factor that is most convenient for their needs. This model is better suited for the large number of distribution channels available for app developers, many of which do not wish to utilize MDM or EMM software, according to 451 Research.
“As organizations today increase the pace of mobile app development they are also running into the common limitation of not being able to securely reach all users who can benefit from the apps,” said Mark Lorion, chief marketing officer at Apperian, in a statement. “As Apperian applies management and security at the individual app level, any user can be reached regardless of whether their device is managed or not.”
Beginning immediately, applications can be delivered through existing MDM or EMM environments like AirWatch by VMware, in addition to corporate portals and private app stores, according to Apperian. The company has even extended support to non-managed devices, for users who wish to directly download applications via email or from barcodes.
All of the apps downloaded through the new distribution channels are secured by Apperian’s mobile application management and security platform and policy engine. Of course, customers can still choose to distribute their applications through Apperian’s existing MAM platform and private, branded app store offering, according to the announcement.
Apperian raised an additional $12 million in series C funding back in September, which will be used to develop the company’s platform innovation. Apperian CEO Brian Day also said he views mobile-focused MSPs as the company’s target market.
