Verizon Wireless on Wednesday unveiled a new mobile device, the tablet Motorola XOOM, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The Basking Ridge, N.J.-based wireless carrier and Motorola Mobility Inc. said the thin gadget is the first device on Googles Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system and will work over Verizon Wireless 3G network in the first quarter of 2011. Verizon Wireless said the device will be 4G-enabled in the second quarter of 2011.

The companies said the Motorola XOOM supports 1080p HD video and HDMI output to display content on bigger HD screens and plays video and other content with Adobe Flash Player.

The Motorola XOOM features Google Maps 5.0 with 3D interaction and delivers access to more than 3 million Google eBooks and thousands of applications from Android Market.

The device also includes a front-facing 2-megapixel camera for video chats and a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera that captures video in 720p HD.

Bill Ogle, chief marketing officer of Motorola Mobility, said the Motorola XOOM is the first device to feature software designed specifically for tablets.”

The cost of the XOOM hasn’t been announced just yet.
