Verizon’s Nokia Lumia 929 Could Come With Release-Date Name Change

Consumers and business users who like Nokia’s line of Lumia devices but prefer Verizon as their wireless network will have to wait just a little bit longer before they get their hands on the next flagship Windows Phone from the Finland-based manufacturer.
Once thought to hit store shelves and make its way into stockings by the end of the year, the Lumia 929 apparently won’t be available until mid-January. That’s the story from Windows Phone Central, which says that the release date is now likely slated for Jan. 16, 2014.
What’s more interesting is the possibility that what everyone’s been calling the Lumia 929, won’t have a numerical moniker after all. @evleaks, which has been on the money with many similar rumors in the past, tweeted that it’s likely that the 929 will go by the Lumia “Icon.”
That would seem to fall right in line with what Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said earlier this year. The Redmond, Wash.-based software giant is in the process of buying the device manufacturer.
“I will say that I think we can probably do better for consumer names than just ‘the Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 1020,’ and yet because of where both companies are and the independent nature of the businesses, we haven’t been able to shorten that,” Ballmer said in September.
The majority of Nokia flagships to this point have been exclusive in the U.S. to AT&T. Verizon got its first premium Lumia, the 928, earlier this year. The carrier is looking to build up its Windows lineup as the operating system becomes more popular.
The Lumia 929 aka “Icon” is said to offer a quad-core, 2.2 GHz processor; 32GB of storage; 2GB of RAM; and a 20MP camera. No word just yet how many smackers it’ll set you back.
