Rumors abound that Samsung is prepping a new flagship tablet for release, which will feature a whopping 2560×1600 Super AMOLED display and natively run Android’s 4.4.2 KitKat OS.

SamMobile.com was the first to leak the initial device specs, when sources close to the site confirmed the new tablet’s blistering AMOLED display and several other details, including model numbers. According to reports, the device will come in three flavors: Wi-Fi only, 3G and LTE (model numbers SM-T800, SM-T801, and SM-T805, respectively), and will be powered by a processor in the Exynos 5 series. Like its brethren, the new device will also run the TouchWiz magazine overlay and could feature the Ultra Power Saving Mode function, similar to the one currently in use for the Galaxy S5.

The new tablet’s display size is still unknown, but sources estimate that it will be between 8 inches and 10 inches, making it pretty standard fare compared to other tablets on the market. Pricing also is still unknown, but SamMobile believes the price will reflect the tablet’s host of advanced features, most notably the super high-definition screen. Samsung has not issued an official confirmation on the details for this mysterious new tablet.

Samsung’ first tablet to feature a Super AMOLED display hit shelves in 2011 with the release of the Galaxy Tab 7.7, making this the mystery device the first of the company’s tablets to feature similar specs since. BGR noted Samsung’s other upcoming tablets, including the recently revealed Galaxy 4 tablets, don’t feature the same displays and are in no way related to these new rumors. The company also recently released the Galaxy Tab 12.2, one of the largest tablets on the market.

News of Samsung’s latest device is also interesting considering that Apple (APPL) recently canned the proposed 12.9-inch iPad Pro it had been teasing for release this year. Apple’s first large-sized tablet would have come in two versions: one with a 2K-screen resolution similar to Samsung’s device, and a 4K-resolution model. According to Digitimes, Apple scrapped the release of the iPad Pro because of a lack of support for large-sized tablet projects from developers. But while Apple remains dubious for the future of large-sized tablets, it looks as though Samsung is forging ahead with its own regardless of potential pitfalls.
