Despite online calculators from big-name carriers such as AT&T and Verizon, a lot of people are paying too much for their wireless service – and don’t even realize it.

That’s what the Government Accountability Office said in a new report released this week. It found that a lot of consumers are confused about how much wireless data they use, so they buy a data allotment that’s larger than they need in an attempt to avoid overage charges, Re/Code noted.

Case in point: One wireless provider told the GAO that hardly any of its customers are on 500MB-or-less plans, despite the fact that the average consumer uses only 465MB of data per month.

There aren’t as many complaints about overage fees these days, but the reason for that appears to be that fewer people are coming close to maxing out their data.
