Managed services providers (MSPs) should capitalize on the negligence of corporate IT departments that have allowed employees to continue to take risks with company data. The potential risks come from ineffective or non-existent BYOD policies and MDM programs.

Mobile device management (MDM) platform provider Fiberlink released the results of a recent survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, concluding that 51 percent of employees leverage their personal mobile devices for work-related matters. So what's the problem posing as a concern for employers? According to the survey, big percentages of these employees do not use mobile solutions that control corporate data and are engaging in risky behavior.

More than 25 percent of employees admitted to opening or saving work attachment files into a third-party app (e.g., QuickOffice, Dropbox, Evernote), while 20 percent said they have cut or pasted work-related email or attachments from company email to their personal email accounts.

Another 18 percent said they've accessed websites that have been blocked by their companies' IT policies.

Fiberlink Director of Marketing Jonathan Dale said in a prepared statement that today's work environment requires a constant balancing of personal and professional activities.

"Many organizations, including our customers, are starting to prefer the idea of a dual persona solution because it keeps enterprise data safe while allowing employees the freedom to work on their own devices," he said.

The survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of Fiberlink from April 18 to 22, 2013 among 2,064 adults.
