NetApp Finalizes SolidFire Purchase

NetApp (NTAP) has completed its acquisition of all-flash storage systems provider SolidFire, the company announced on Tuesday.

The purchase it expected to equip NetApp with a portfolio of flash-based solutions so it can tackle the burgeoning All-Flash Array market, according to the company.

NetApp originally announced its plans to acquire SolidFire for $870 million in cash in December.

“SolidFire fits nicely into our existing flash portfolio because it is so different from All Flash FAS and the EF-Series,” said David Hitz, NetApp’s executive vice president and founder, in a blog post announcing the acquisition. “It is super-fast and optimized for price-performance. By contrast, ONTAP has broad application integration and a rich set of enterprise-class data services.”

NetApp said the addition of SolidFire’s offerings to its portfolio will allow it to meet customer demand among the three largest All-Flash Array market segments, which encompasses legacy infrastructure buyers, application owners and next-generation infrastructure buyers.

SolidFire’s portfolio will be merged with NetApp’s data fabric strategy now that the acquisition is complete. Dave Wright, SolidFire’s CEO, will be in charge of the SolidFire product line within NetApp, according to the original announcement.
