Northgate Managed Services, based in the United Kingdom, is seeking to train more than 100 students and young adults to enter the managed services market. The effort involves an IT Apprenticeship Scheme in five regions across England, according to a company press release.

Specifically, Northgate is directly targeting 16- to 18-year-olds via an 18-month on-the-job training scheme with on-going recruitment throughout 2011, the company says. Northgate’s ‘earn as you learn’ apprenticeship combines IT systems and support educational study with hands-on training. According to a prepared statement:

“As with every Northgate employee, each apprentice is given their own personal development plan, with a mixture of online and classroom training which develops core skills and competencies such as communication, time management, customer service, problem solving and many more. Each apprentice is allocated a mentor and ‘buddy’ to support and advise them throughout the programme. On completion of the scheme, every successful apprentice will hold a formal NVQ qualification; possess 18 months of work experience and the potential for them to move into permanent positions in Northgate.”

I’m intrigued. I hear from quite a few MSPs in North America that struggle to find, develop and retain talent. It sounds like Northgate Managed Services has found a proactive approach to fulfill its own talent needs. The company claims to support more than 2,000 customers, 420,000 end-users and more than 100,000 help desk calls annually.
