GroundWork Sets Sights on OpenStack Monitoring

GroundWork is bringing its cloud performance management suite to the open source world. The company announced at OpenStack Summit Atlanta 2014 that it was now providing performance and availability management monitoring of OpenStack-based clouds via its GroundWork Cloud Hub offering.

GroundWork Cloud Hub enables availability and performance visibility for Nova compute, Neutron networking and Cinder storage components, as well as the underlying physical hardware and other data center assets. In case you don't speak OpenStack, those three elements are all part of the open source cloud platform's suite of capabilities. And monitoring could play an important role in the growing importance and usage of OpenStack as a major cloud computing platform.

"Existing monitoring modules built into OpenStack are focused on metering and billing, which is an important, but very different set of capabilities than the availability and performance monitoring that GroundWork offers,” said David Dennis, vice president of Marketing and Business Development for GroundWork, in a prepared statement. “OpenStack cloud operators concerned with total cloud capacity, performance tuning and scaling will gain insight into chokepoints at multiple layers of their OpenStack deployments."

According to GroundWork, the new OpenStack monitoring modules for Cloud Hub provide:

  • The ability to monitor performance and analytics of Nova, Neutron and Cinder modules.

  • Information to make sense of metrics across the entire system.

  • The ability to combine metrics for multi-level troubleshooting.

  • Visualizations for specific data important provisioning and capacity planning such as CPU Steal (Linux) and ReadyState (VMware), storage from the virtual machine down to the SAN, and network throughput across routers, switches and virtual networks.

"We see a steady rising interest in OpenStack and have been fielding many inquiries about how to better manage OpenStack installs," said Michael Cote, Research director at 451 Research, in a prepared statement accompanying GroundWork's announcement. "It's clear that part of OpenStack becoming 'enterprise grade' is laying on mature monitoring and management, which is what you'd expect from a veteran of that space like GroundWork."
