Which MSP Services Are Most Profitable?

StorageCraft recently spoke with MSP and partner Guy Baroan about his approach to MSP service offerings. One question we had for him—and one that other MSPs might have—is this: which services or solutions are most profitable?

The answer, according to Guy, was actually quite simple. He explained that the services that are most profitable aren’t necessarily specific types of services or products. Really, what makes a solution profitable is whether or not technicians have to spend a lot of time troubleshooting it. Put simply, the most profitable solutions are those that just work.

Not to toot our own horn, but Guy used the example of StorageCraft ShadowProtect. It’s a backup solution that’s not necessarily the most inexpensive, but for a pro like Guy that doesn’t matter because he knows it’s more valuable than other products. He told me that the reason he uses it over the many other solutions he’s tried is because he doesn’t have to mess with it—it takes very little time to maintain. It works, he knows it works, and he never has to worry about whether or not a ShadowProtect backup is successful, plus he knows those backups will be recoverable. With other solutions he used in the past, it wasn’t always so simple.

Ultimately, the considerations an MSP needs to make are many when it comes to determining what types of software and hardware solutions to provide to clients. But ultimately, the ones that are most reliable will inevitably be the ones that are most effective, and in turn, are the ones that are the most profitable. Time is equal to dollars, and the less time you have to waste servicing someone the better.

Pricing is always a concern for both MSPs and their clients. It’s tough for any business to decide on a solution that seems more expensive at the onset, but if it saves you lots of trouble you’ll be making money simply by saving time. If a product can ultimately save you time and a client’s bacon, is it really expensive or is it just a wise investment? I think we all know the answer to that.
