Slowing Down Speeds Up Growth

If you’re a Simon and Garfunkel fan, you might remember the duo singing, “Slow down, you move too fast.”  You might be thinking, “Sure, maybe they have time to slow down, but not me.” Growing your MSP business means never having enough time in the day to do everything you have to do. So it might seem counterproductive to slow down every once in a while.

Whether your ongoing efforts are targeted at finding strategic methods for improving operations and cutting expenses, or you are focused on adding value to the products you sell, when you like what you do—when you’re engaged—you’re more likely to build new services or products, generate new ideas and create new customers.

If you’re not yet convinced that there are benefits to slowing down, then, just for a moment, consider this bit of advice from Jason Fried, businessman and co-author of, "Rework," the New York Times best-selling book: “When you really want to do something right, which is usually what you should be striving for, you tend to slow down.” Although Fried’s advice to slow down occurred to him when he was exercising, he eventually saw the benefits of slowing down as it relates to doing business—and to just about anything else worth doing.

What Do You Want to Do?

So, take a moment to slow down to answer this simple question: Why do you do what you do? In all likelihood, you’re probably a MSP for one important reason: You like what you do and you’re really good at it.

Now consider this: According to Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace, 87 percent of workers are not engaged, meaning they are emotionally disconnected from their work and therefore are less likely to be productive. In other words, “Work is more often a source of frustration than one of fulfillment,” according to the report.

But if you like what you do—if you’re engaged—strong business outcomes are connected to you. According to the Gallup report, “Employee engagement is strongly connected to business outcomes—such as productivity, profitability and customer satisfaction—that are essential to an organization’s financial success.”

Of course, even when you’re engaged, sometimes you really can’t take time to slow down. “Some things are more important to get right than other things, and there’s often external context which may make slowing down impossible,” Fried said. “But, in general, given the opportunity, you’d slow down to get something right.”

So, every once in a while, slow down and don’t move too fast. In doing so, you’re more likely to make the right decision. And, who knows? You might get to feelin’ groovy.
