MSPs and Backup: You Must Master Bare Metal Restores

By CloudBerry Lab Guest Blog 2

A growing number of MSPs have mastered physical and virtual backups and restores. But that doesn't go far enough. The next logical step is complete disaster recovery for bare metal restores — a particularly important capability as businesses strive to protect their data from a system failure or even a major catastophe like Hurricane Sandy. Here's why.

Let's look at two scenarios:

  • First, a customer's server suffers a complete system failure or corruption.

  • Second, your customer's entire network (including servers and/or workstations) is lost in a flood, hurricane, earthquake, fire or some other Act of God.

In both cases the customers' data could be lost forever and a restore onto the existing systems could be impossible. Bare Metal Restore technology protects MSPs and their customers from such setbacks. Indeed, Bare Metal Restore allows MSPs to rapidly rebuild an entire system — including all components of operating system, applications and user data to a new server or workstation or the existing hardware (if it still functions).

Of course, MSPs need a proactive approach to Bare Metal Restores. In other words, you must perform backups for Bare Metal Restores on a regular basis. That approach increases data protection levels and ensures entire server or workstation endpoints can be easily recovered from secure cloud storage in case of system failure, corruption or a broader disaster.

I suspect a large number of MSPs have yet to master Bare Metal Restores. Our MSP partners here at CloudBerry Lab are a few steps ahead of the pack. Our CloudBerry Backup 3.6 has a Bare-Metal edition, plus editions for Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange Server and plenty more. Take a look at this video tutorial and you'll see exactly why Bare Metal Restore is a logical way to differentiate your business — and more fully protect your customers' data.
