5 Things to Look for in a Database Backup Service Vendor

By Carbonite Guest Blog

Businesses use databases to backup much of their vital data including payroll, financial, email and accounting information, yet the majority of small businesses are not backing up this valuable data on a daily basis. According to a Carbonite study, 79 percent of small businesses consider the ability to backup SQL databases to be important and 66 percent consider the ability to backup Microsoft Exchange important.

The big concern: The study found that 25 percent of small businesses have admittedly lost or accidentally deleted data from at least one database, with 55 percent of respondents stating that they haven’t backed up their data in more than two days. Every time I mention these statistics to any of our channel partners, you instantly see an overwhelming consensus that backing up databases are critical for all small businesses.

Here are the five important factors to consider when selecting a database backup vendor.

  1. Affordability. Most small businesses have very limited budgets. Help your clients find a vendor that has a price point that makes sense.

  2. Ease of Use. Time is a limited resource. Find a solution that is easy to deploy and manage based on your clients’ needs.

  3. Security. There are many vendors that compete in the backup business. It is important to know that the vendor you select to work with is a trusted brand and is going to be around for the long haul.

  4. Database Support. In the most critical times, having a world-class support team can turn a bad situation into a good one. Make sure you work with a vendor that invests and delivers with high-caliber support.

  5. Off-Site. Even when important databases are backed up on site, natural disasters can destroy your client’s data. Make sure to have a backup of your client’s most critical data off-site.
