Quest Software Receives $2.3 Billion Bid (From Dell?)

Quest Software (NASDAQ: QSFT) has received a $2.32 billion takeover bid, allegedly from Dell. Insight Venture Partners, another recent bidder, has three days to make a potential counter bid for the desktop virtualization, IT administration and managed services software company.

The Quest Software bidding war has involved multiple offers -- and counter offers -- in recent weeks. Reuters, The New York Times and other media outlets say Dell is involved in the bidding, though the PC giant has declined to comment.

Dell apparently has bid $27.50 per share for Quest Software, but Quest's shares are trading slightly above that level this morning. The logical conclusion: Investors expect Insight Venture Partners and partner Vector Capital to raise their bid for Quest Software, though that's speculation at this point.

Amid the bids and counter bids, Quest Software has continued to focus on its managed services software portfolio, preparing to more tightly integrate PacketTrap PSA and PacketTrap RMM into an end-to-end cloud service for MSPs.
