Unitrends Acquires PHD Virtual for Virtualized SMB Data Protection
Unitrends is acquiring virtual backup and disaster recovery solutions provider PHD Virtual Technologies to tackle data protection for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). The financial details of the deal were not disclosed but Insight Venture Partners, a global private equity and venture capital firm, has primary investments in both Unitrends and PHD Virtual, and also has a major stake in IT monitoring and management vendor Kaseya.
The acquisition will enable Unitrends to leverage PHD Virtual’s technology platform and data protection products, the companies said in a statement. That gives Unitrends a virtualization play that could potentially pit the company against players in the market such as Veeam.
Unitrends president and CEO Mike Coney said in a prepared statement that SMBs have “significant data protection and disaster recovery needs that have largely gone unmet.”
“Unitrends and PHD Virtual, both of whom have built their businesses serving this broad market and understand its unique requirements, will join forces to develop a platform that offers the most robust data protection and disaster recovery solutions available on the market today,” he said.
Both Unitrends and PHD Virtual said the acquisition will serve more than 10,000 customers worldwide and more than 8,000 global channel partners.
Coney sat down exclusively with MSPmentor, Talkin’ Cloud’s sister site, in November.
