AT&T, Avaya, CenturyLink Deliver Hot New Services

  • Written by James Anderson
  • January 8, 2019
Some of the channel's biggest players made waves last month.

Some of the channel’s biggest players made waves last month.

We were hurtling toward the holidays, but that didn’t preventing heavy hitters in IT and telecommunications from rolling out new products and services that could drastically change their respective industries.

Take for instance Microsoft, whose new virtual desktop service could force some of its technology partners – and their partners – to rethink their product road maps.

AWS used its annual conference to announce a new offering that serves on-premises workloads.

And Ecessa threw its hat into the ring of SD-WAN providers developing a security apparatus.

We narrowed our list to 10 this time, owing to the condensed December work schedule, but you can undoubtedly say that the gallery lives up to its “quality-over-quantity” billing. Slide through images to see the top new services of last month.

Missed the November edition? Take a look at it.

CenturyLink

CenturyLink's new managed firewall service incorporates Palo Alto Networks firewalls with its Security Log Monitoring service.

The Security Log Monitoring platform manages Palo Alto's firewalls to provide threat intelligence, cloud security monitoring, and threat detection and response capabilities. CenturyLink’s vice president of global security services told us that the integration will give digital businesses "end-to-end visibility."

Edward Gately has the scoop.
Avaya

The cloud communications provider launched a device-as-a-service (DaaS) offering and a new "storefront."

The DaaS offering lets customers buy Avaya's latest smart desktop devices on a monthly subscription basis. In the meantime, Avaya designed the storefront to make it easier for SMB and midmarket organizations to learn, shop, buy and manage cloud solutions and services. it expands the company's cloud communications offerings for contact center as a service (CCaaS) and unified communications as a service (UCaaS).

Read our story about Avaya.
AT&T

AT&T's new disaster-recovery service arrived with the help of Sungard Availability Services and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The “Cloud Recovery – AWS from Sungard AS” solution mitigates cloud-storage risks and allows companies to recover data in four hours or less. AT&T bills the managed service as being for cloud storage, but AWS provides hybrid support for both on-premises and off-premises.

Get details on the partnership involving the three companies.
Giga

Giga Data Centers announced plans to build a colocation facility in Moorseville, North Carolina.

Todd Weiss wrote that data center will go into operation in February in Charlotte and offer a Power Use Efficiency (PUE) rating of less than 1.15. The company claims this number is about 85 percent more efficient than normal data centers.

Learn more details from Weiss' article.
Tech Data

The distributor signed a "comprehensive" distribution agreement with hyperconverged secondary storage vendor Cohesity.

Cohesity, which bills itself as "100-percent partner-led," allows partners to help customers whose storage capacity is consumed by secondary workloads, like backup, disaster recovery and analytics. The agreement applies to the U.S. and Canada.

Lynn Haber wrote about the announcement.
Ecessa

Ecessa added deep-packet inspection and a "next-gen" firewall to its SD-WAN solution.

The vendor announced a host of firmware updates it will roll out during 2019. One is deep-packet inspection, which is the granular evaluation of application workloads to maximize traffic performance. Perhaps more relevant to partners is how Ecessa answered the question of security by introducing a layer 7 firewall.

Read about Ecessa's upgrades and the growing importance of security in the SD-WAN conversation.
Cyxtera

The company expanded the Cyxtera Extensible Data Center (CXD) platform to Washington, D.C., and London.

Cyxtera also announced that it will connect to New York, Chicago, Silicon Valley and Phoenix in 2019. The CXD platform debuted last year in Dallas. Users harness the platform's compute nodes to configure connectivity an hyperconverged infrastructure across Cyxtera’s colocation data centers.

Check out our coverage of the expansion.
Kore

Kore is adding new offerings for advanced connectivity, core networking and eSIM thanks to a recent acquisition.

The global IoT provider is buying Netherlands-based Aspider-NGI in a deal that will help Kore to roll out managed connectivity services and solutions. The deal also increases Kore's presence in Europe and Asia Pacific.

Edward Gately has the story.
Microsoft/Citrix

The computing giant and its partners are creeping into the virtual cloud desktop-services market with the Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD).

Jeff Schwartz wrote about the consternation Citrix partners feel about Microsoft’s upcoming Azure-based desktop as a service. Citrix is a Microsoft "alliance partner," but Redmond must quell worries that its new service will take market share from the Citrix Workspace Cloud.

But Citrix executives are reacting positively to the new developments, and they will provide connectors from WVD to their own services. Citrix will also launch a DaaS offering that includes WVD with Windows 10.

Schwartz wrote an article from the perspective of Citrix partners.
AWS

Amazon Web Services unveiled Outposts, intended to meet hybrid demand and ensure its foothold in the cloud and the data-center markets.

The Outposts, announced at the re:Invent conference, are compute and storage racks containing the native APIs AWS uses in its cloud. Lynn Greiner calls it "AWS in a box."

The new offering will be available in the second half of 2019.

Learn more about the implications from Greiner.
