VMware CEO Discusses Nicira, Software-Defined Networks
VMware (NYSE: VMW) CEO Pat Gelsinger struck a careful balance when he recently discussed the virtualization company’s buyout of Nicira, software-defined networks and VCE — the ongoing collaboration with Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO) and EMC (NYSE: EMC).
In this FastChat Video, Gelsinger quickly summarizes the Nicira opportunity and continued work with Cisco Systems and EMC on VCE (the virtual compute environment company):
The video, recorded Aug. 27, 2012 at VMworld, offers some key takeaways for VMware channel partners:
- Gelsinger noted that some members of the press called the Nicira deal “bold and brilliant.” But he conceded it could take some time — years — before the brilliance of the deal is truly understood by all observers.
- He also said there continues to be “very strong affirmation” of the Cisco-EMC-VMware partnership. Gelsinger sees an opportunity for those the three companies to collaborate across the physical and virtual domains.
Cisco CEO John Chambers made similar statements during an earnings call in mid-August. He said the Cisco relationship with EMC and VMware remains strategic to partners and customers. But he also vowed that Cisco would lead the industry transition to software-defined data centers.
Still, partners should focus on the here and now — The VAR Guy believes. And right here, right now, VMware and Cisco seem to be gaining momentum together with the VCE partner push.
