UniPrint Releases Infinity Suite for VMware Horizon

Printing virtualization firm UniPrint has announced the latest version of its UniPrint Infinity Software suite, designed to provide secure print support for VMware (VMW) Horizon virtual and remote desktops.

“Printing from within a VDI environment such as VMware Horizon presents IT with unique challenges in remote printing as user sessions are moved from localized printers to sessions controlled from within the data center,” said Arron Fu, vice president of Software Development at UniPrint, in a statement. “Issues such as limited bandwidth, slow printing speed and excessive printer management start to take center stage when considering printing through remote desktops across the cloud. UniPrint’s universal print driver overcomes these issues by compressing print jobs into PDFs and sending them back to the client using VMware Horizon’s native PCoIP.”

The company’s PDF-based universal printer driver software expands the advanced capabilities of VDI to printing by eliminating the need to add multiple manufacturer printer drivers to the image, according to UniPrint. By simplifying printer management and allowing for fast remote printing, UniPrint said it aims to streamline and enhance secure enterprise printing and give VMware users a wider range of printing solutions for their computing environments.

“The very nature of running VMware Horizon 6.0 means that whilst the user and the printer may only be physically a few meters away, the user session and the printer may now be hundreds or thousands of miles away, running seamlessly through the data center,” said Fu. “It becomes optimal therefore that a virtual print solution is deployed that facilitates compressed transferral of print jobs across the virtual channel back to the client, using as few system overheads as possible.”

With unified printing software, enterprise users should be able to cut down on the confusion surrounding large-scale print jobs in their environments and eliminate IT overhead. UniPrint plans to display the Infinity Suite and the rest of its printing portfolio during VMworld this week in San Francisco.
