Data recovery and ediscovery provider Kroll Ontrack has added data recovery capabilities for VMware (VMW) Virtual SAN (VSAN) to its growing solutions palette. Thank a customer's near-data disaster for the new service: Kroll recovered data from several VSAN–managed hard disks, proving its ability to work with VMware’s recent software-defined storage release.

“Since VSAN is so new, we are very proud to be the first to completely recover virtual machines from VSAN hard disks,” said Jeff Pederson, manager of Data Recovery Operations at Kroll Ontrack, in a statement. “With newly gained knowledge, we developed a toolset for these systems, and can now handle new VSAN recovery requests in an expedited fashion.” 

VSAN, which launched in March, provides policy-driven storage for vSphere environments to help enterprises streamline their storage provisioning and management, according to VMware. The solution also is embedded in the vSphere kernel.

Having a recovery plan for VMware VSAN environments should help Kroll Ontrack among its solution provider partners as they move deeper into the VMware stack. It remains to be seen whether the service will catch on among North American enterprises.
