AirWatch 8.1 Includes Enhancements for OS Support, Admins and Enterprise
Not content to rest on its laurels, AirWatch has released version 8.1 of its enterprise mobility management platform, with several new features including support for additional operating systems and improved administrator and user features.
With AirWatch 8.1, the company is announcing first-time support for several new operating systems, including Windows 10 and iOS 9, with iBeacon and iWatch integration for Apple users. The new release includes support for per-app VPN on Android via AirWatch Tunnel and third-party VPN platforms, with full device containerization and biometric authentication features for devices running Samsung Knox. And in a nod to the open source community, AirWatch has also added support for the Tizen operating system, allowing admins to enroll Tizen devices and manage devices remotely.
Laptop and desktop users gain the ability to remote control OS X devices, with new Chromebook enhancements and additional APIs for rugged device platforms, according to the announcement.
For administrators, AirWatch has tweaked the existing device lifecycle management process to allow IT staff to better manage compliance violations, send notifications for enrollment workflows and improved shared device and kiosk workflows, according to the company. Admins will also have additional access to compliance status as well as several other features. Changes to the user interface across web app management, profile management and several other tools round out the additions tailored for IT users.
Finally, AirWatch 8.1 includes additional integration for Syslog and Palo Alto Network’s Wildfire for event logging and app reputation analysis, respectively. The latest version also includes expanded REST APIs for devices, users and admins.
AirWatch version 8 released in February, with the company expecting the newest version to make end-user management simpler via unified access to all enterprise mobile devices and applications. In April, VMware announced bundled versions of its NSX network virtualization solution with AirWatch as well as NSX with VMware Horizon.
